The boy's basketball team
We have had an excellent start of the season with at least two wins in our hat and I am sure there are more to come I will be sure to keep up to date reports on recent wins of the ola basketball team.
Mighty mites are here to cheer
Olivia Coleman in third grade offered to get interviewed about the mighty mites. She was filled with so much joy to speak about her cheerleading team. Oliva Coleman has never done or thought of becoming a cheerleader. One day her friends Emily Ruiz, Jocelyn McGuire, and Gabrielle Natividad aked her to join, and so that night Olivia asked her mom Mrs. Coleman if she could join the cheerleading team, then Olivia was on the mighy mites cheerleading. Olivia also joined becuase she thought it would be fun. Olivia Coleman works hard everytime she gets to go. This is Mrs. Kays first year doing this so hopefully its a good turnout.
the OLA's school basketball season
The OLA's girls school basketball season has started. There has been one game, in which our competetors did not show up. Hopefully the team will face another school's soon.
Ucla Vs. Usc
Yes!!!
finally the game many people, including OLA students and teachers, have been waiting for! If you didn’t already know UCLA and USC are HUGE
rivals, yeah kind of like the rivalry with your siblings but even worse because they settle it out through a amazing game of football.
For about the past six consecutive years USC has been the victor but this was a year of a new victor. At the time both teams had low rankings and it didn’t really look like 2012 was either of their year.
Moving along now UCLA was currently ranked at 17th while USC was ranked at 18th. WAIT! This is crazy, it’s been a few years since UCLA has been ranked better than USC. But putting this behind its game day November 24, 2012 the sky is full of clouds and rain is on its way.
As the first quarter starts the UCLA BRUINS kick off and the USC TROJANS start at the 25 yard line. Starting quarterback Matt Barkley sets his Trojan offense up with Marqise Lee in motion and says that magic word to get this game rolling. Except what he does next isn’t so magical as Marqise Lee goes for the pass but Matt Barkley completely throws the ball into a UCLA defender’s hand. Wow what a great way to start off the game if you didn’t understand what I meant the starting Quarterback just threw an interception. Gratefully the defender slid out of bounds but put UCLA in a great position as their offense comes out to the field ready to do better. Starting quarterback for UCLA is Brett Hundley and although he is a freshman quarterback, meaning that it’s his first year as quarterback, he is ready to do his best and it shows. At first glance its seems as if his offense team is a bit disorientated but knowing that his chance of a touchdown is great since he starts at the 11 yard line. So as he motions a teammate to his side he says hike and with pressure charging at him he throws it down the middle of the field were a receiver catches it and gets the first down. (Now don’t worry I’m not going to tell every play for UCLA dominated USC in most of them but I’ll tell you the highlights of the game) So getting back on track here just a few minutes later the first touchdown off the game is made as the UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley runs into the touchdown zone. A risky move but well worth it for it was only going to get better for UCLA whereas for USC, well they should have just put aside the rivalry and stayed focus. Sadly they didn’t listen and it only got worse. USC gets the back only for a short time until having to punt it away were UCLA starts at the their ten yard line and at first has few struggles but then they pull together to for a short time to get a series of first downs. This was shortly stopped a few times when the quarterback was sacked a few times but the UCLA offense keeps pushing on toward the touchdown zone. Eventually getting stuck and settles with a field goal. Now with the score being 10-0, USC gets
another try at offense but they are very unsuccessful as the ball is fumbled into UCLA hands. This is then answered by ANOTHER touchdown! IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER!
Shortly after the first quarter ends with USC offense on the 50 yard line. Early in the second quarter USC quickly loses the ball and UCLA proving to be too much for USC defense as they push forward towards the touchdown zone with little struggles. This is then answered by a simple touchdown for UCLA. but even if the score is 24-0 USC doesn’t give up and they quickly get a touchdown. Showing their determination USC defense quickly stops UCLA offense which is followed by a touchdown for USC. Score: 24-14! This is shortly followed by the end of the first half and the start of the second with USC kicking off. Oh and to make it better it started to rain. Oh but it gets only better as UCLA offense is getting nowhere a low hike creates a
fumble resulting with a touchdown for USC. Score 20-24 UCLA still in the lead but only by a little.
The Game continues on, as ucla begins to pull away from the trojans. In the end, the Bruins are victorious, and Trojans face defeat. all in all, it was a great game, and hopefully will be better next year!

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL SEASON COMES TO AN END
BY MATTHEW DIAZ
SPORTS REPORTER
Varsity volleyball season ended recently in the second round of CYO playoffs. After defeating St. Raymond in two sets easily in the first round, the team came to face
Holy Angels. Holy Angels won two out of three sets, beating the Raiders.
In divisional play, the Raiders took first place with a 13-1 record. They lost to Pomona Catholic Middle School. Other than that, they easily beat all the other
teams, getting first place in the East Mountain division. Their toughest teams were St. Louise de Marilac and Holy Name of Mary.
Due to many students that competed, OLA had two teams -- the Gold team and the Blue team. The Blue team, unfortunately, did not make the playoffs.

Varsity football season comes to an end

SPORTS REPORTER
OLA’s varsity football season came to an end on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the hands of St. Phillip the Apostle Catholic School. The season began on Sept. 9, when the Raiders got their first taste of victory with a 24-0 win over St. Francis of Rome. They continued playing well, beating teams like St. Dorothy and Pomona Catholic Middle School.
The team's most challenging games came from St. Louise deMarillac and Holy Name of Mary. St. Louise, their rivals, took first place
in the division easily, going undefeated. In OLA’s third game, the team from Claremont took a shocking loss from Holy Name of Mary. Holy Name's quarterback
threw a desperate pass on the last play of the game to score a touchdown and win the game. OLA also lost twice to St. Louise.
At the end the season, OLA and Holy Name of Mary were tied in points and the two had to play an extra game to decide playoff participation. Or so they thought.
Holy Name pulled out the win, and it looks as though OLA's season was over. Then, Head Coach Carter informed the squad that another team had dropped out of the playoffs, opening a berth for OLA. The team was heading into the post season along with St. Louise and Holy Name of Mary.
At the first round of play offs, OLA came face to face with Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart had been undefeated in its
division. OLA swept passed them easily to take the win. But at the end of the game, OLA did something very nice that showcased the Raiders' great
sportsmanship.
On Sacred Heart’s team, there was a disabled eighth-grader who would probably never play football again. The Raiders were winning by two
touchdowns and Sacred Heart was on the other side of the field. So OLA decided to let the disabled kid run for a 70-yard touchdown to end the game and the
season for Sacred Heart.
OLA had won the game and was heading to the second round of playoffs.
In the second round, OLA played St. Phillip of Rome. The strong St. Phillip team dominated the match, cruising to a 26-0 win over the Raiders. OLA’s season came to an end. All the players were very proud, finishing the season with an overall winning record of 8 wins and 4 losses.
Next up: The Raiders will take to the courts for basketball season this winter.
